I know you're all waiting for the latest installment with bated breath ....

I received a letter from the blessed Brian (see paens of praise passim) saying that it had all worked out okay, and that as of December 20th, my meter reading was XXXX and my outstanding balance was 4p. (XXXX being a plausible number, and certainly a lot nearer to my actual meter reading than the one they had previously, which was 9000 units away).

Now, I find that the 4p balance is awfully convenient - after all, it means that they haven't been overcharging me while they've been messing up my account. But I wasn't sure that I was willing to argue this too much. After all, once I'm happy that they're looking at the right numbers, I can argue for compensation then cancel my account with them. So frankly, I'll take that.

Except I got an email last night saying that my bill had been updated, and, more ominously, "Important: There’s additional information on this bill which you should take the time to read as it may affect the payment amount or due date.".

Really?

Would that important information be the fact that I'm now £60 in debit, rather than 4pence perhaps? Could nPower be juggling the numbers somewhat? Could they be undermining the efforts of their own Executive Complaints team?

So, once more, game on.

Only this time I have an 0800 number and a name.

Torpedoes in the water.

Is the sudden £60 for the period 20 Dec to sometime this month, or are they just fannying around ina more creative manner?

A little more creative. They sent me a bill saying "Actual meter reading on 20jun=XXXX, therefore balance =£0.04."

Then they sent me a bill a week later saying "Estimated reading on 20jun=YYYY, therefore balance =£58 debit."

The difference between XXXX and YYYY being 50 quids worth of gas, I guess.

Shame they used the word Actual on the first one .....

Well, that was a mistake.

I can empathise. I had my gas meter removed in October, but they seemed to have difficulty in understanding that it was removed, not replaced. The first three people I talked to all promised that it had been sorted out and not to worry. These calls were normally followed within a week by a new bill for even more money. The fourth person promised to call me back with an update (but never did), and it wasn't until after I spoke to person number 5 that I actually got a letter saying I was in credit. I'm still waiting for the cheque to arrive though.

:-) This has been going on since June last year. I'm remarkably sanguine about the whole thing by now.

*grin*

I know. I'd only be writing in disgust to the Daily Mail if this wasn't going on. nPower are actually doing a public service by screwing up my account so comprehensively. You should all be grateful! Think what else I might be up to!

Frankly I'm ringing Npower now, to see if I can persuade them to prolong this, I'm worries about what you will do once it's finished...

Er, "Debit" or "debt"? That one letter changes the meaning somewhat.

Or does it? I don't even know any more.

Nope. Your account is either in credit, which means they owe you cash, or debit, in which case you owe them.

It is debit. I think the simplest explanation is that debit is an adjective and debt is a noun.

Debit: Also a verb!

If it wasn't originally, it has certainly be verbed since.

Yes, it has been verbed :-)

I still can't hear that sentence without a thrill of schadenfreude. Someone's gonna get it big...
